Ate at Thai Express a couple of weeks ago with Ha.
As we were eating, a middle aged white couple who had been sitting near us finished, got up from the table, and dropped their loyalty voucher (one of those buy X meals, get one free things) and said, âyou could use thisâ and walked off.
The first thought that came to my mind was, âwtf!â
âW-T-Fâ
So Iâm thinking that guy must think Iâm local Vietnamese. (I was speaking Vietnamese to Ha) But even then, Thai Express is NOT for local people. It is by no means affordable. Itâs right in the middle of downtown. Yet, with some poor local guy, how offensive is that to just drop something on someone elseâs table and just walk off?
â(You look poor) you could use this.â
How offended would you be if you were in the US, and some random guy dropped his coupon on your table on his way out and walked off. That would be a big slap in the face. Thereâs no way that guy dropped the coupon thinking I was an expat. I cannot imagine a culture in which that would be considered normal.
Again, âW-T-Fâ.
Regarding Thai Express, it sucks. Value is terrible. Service is what you expect in Hanoi (eh). Food is average, and quantity isnât there either. In fact, if you ever ate at Bun Ta (Thai Express took over the Bun Ta location at the Ho Guom/Ho Hoang Kiem), youâre getting the exact same experience: overrated, overpriced generic food.
I think we ended up spending $10 USD per person. Iâd never been to any Thai Express locations in Vietnam before (I get a bad feeling when âexpressâ is connected to food, even though I enjoy fast food as much as everyone else) and definitely have no plans to return.
Hereâs the info for Thai Express anyway: (image above thanks to New Hanoian)

Mike wow, how rude and arrogant, I would’ve given him a good ol American “fuck you!” You know while in Las Vegas, I had a couple offer us a coupon into a seafood buffett however they asked if we would like to accept this coupon because they weren’t going to use it. However the gesture of this white guy at the Thai restaurant was rather arrogant , sorry to hear about this dude.
Thanks David. I guess I was in too much shock to respond before they left.
What the man did was in all honesty and sincerety and simplicity. Y’all just being racist and concited and self contradictory!
Micheal said he did not need the coupon so why are you complaining that the food was expensive??
You giving them bad press and saying you will never go back there, yet you publish their address for others to go??
Wether you are ‘local’ or ‘American’ you cannot run away from the fact that you are originally from Vietnam. Be proud of who you are and what your poeple got.
You can take a man from the bush to the city but you cannot take the bush out of the man. Think about that, work on yourself.
That is an amazing comment right there.
