I really, really, really love eBay. I’ve been using the site for over a decade (and I’m not even 30!), but I think what’s most interesting about it is how much you can learn- about people, ecommerce, economics, and the world.
Anytime I think about a topic or find something new that I’d like to find more on, I’ll probably go through the following process: 1) Wikipedia 2) Google 3) eBay.
Every so often, I will be interested in what’s going on with Vietnamese people, so I’ll do a search on eBay for “Nguyen”. Happens to be my last name like it is for over 70% in this country, and it’s very uniquely Vietnamese, so easy to avoid irrelevant results. My searches are like a hope that I’ll find something interesting related to Vietnam.
For example, below is a jersey of former Cowboys linebacker Dat Nguyen I bought years ago. Other things we can learn from eBay:
Artists / Authors:
- Tom and Dustin Nguyen are comic book artists. Dustin’s worked on a number of Batman titles.
- Dominic Nguyen writes or draws a manage called Megatokyo.
- Hoang Nguyen is a comic book artist.
- Joel Nguyen is a sculptor for small game pieces (MechWarrior).
- Nguyen Minh Son is a painter.
- Thao Nguyen is Jimmy Thong Tran’s future wife (he’s a big fan), singer.
- Duy Nguyen writes children’s books about Origami.
Fashion / Clothing:
- Tom K Nguyen is a fashion designer, seems to be more focused on women’s stuff.
- Nina Nguyen does accessories.
- “Remember Nguyen” is a brand of clothing for toddlers and infants.
Poker:
- Scotty Nguyen is Midland’s role model, but also a fabulous gambler as a poker player. Can you believe there is a bobblehead doll of him?
- Men (strange first name, maybe it should be Minh?) Nguyen’s another famous poker player, Men the Master.
Other:
- Tila “Tequila” Nguyen is a crazy ho. Formerly with Shawne Merriman of the Chargers.
- Christine Nguyen is some kind of soft-porn star. Also “played” in the 2005 Lingerie Bowl.
- Dat Nguyen, as I mentioned, was a linebacker for the Cowboys, the first Vietnamese in professional American sports. Was also an All-American first teamer at Texas A&M. I actually wish I had his A&M jersey instead because I am a 49ers fan.
- Gemma Nguyen: Martial Artist with her own videos. Good looking, but small. Would seriously whoop my ass. But maybe I can run faster than her. So hah! In yo face, I mean running away from yo face!
- Dustin (not the artist) and Johnny Tri Nguyen are actors. I’ve talked about Johnny a number of times on this site before. Dustin was part of 21 Jump Street with Johnny Depp.
Some odd things came up in my search:
A guy was selling his customized Astros baseball jersey. What’s so odd about this? Ah, nothing really. He’s just a size 52, which makes him one big dude. I’m a size 40 myself.
Another place was selling someone’s wedding DVDs. Not cool! Also, is this really how (uh, look at the cover….) people were documenting their marital bliss as recently as six years ago? I think we need some Chung to the rescue!
