âVietnam Computer Electronics World Expo 2010â is Vietnamâs equivalent of E3 and Comdex. I guess I would say it has the name to sound like a Comdex, with some of the big international vendors that would be at a Comdex (Canon, Sony, Samsung) or E3 (VTCâs Games, Logitech), but the rest is whomever else (companies selling juice- well, maybe thatâs for the demographic that attends, massage chairs, and other random things.) wants to be there that can pay the fees.
Anyway, âVietnam Computer Electronics World Expo 2010â. Thatâs a long title. I guess we could also call it VCEX, pronounced VSEX. Or Just CEX = Sex. CEX 2010! I feel like the long title is some kind of insecure way to compensate for the lack of actual expo content.
To recap my experience, I figure we can just review my live updates from Mimo, in sequential order, from when I got there around 10:30 AM:
-
At the big computer show in q7, sony is showing off PS3 in 3d, huge crowd here already and its only 1030 am
- When I got in, it was definitely crowded, which did surprise me. Who giddies up for a convention at 10 in the morning? Vietnamese people do, apparently. Then again, going to E3 or Comdex at 10 is pretty late too, so maybe itâs my own laziness creating this assumption.
- Sony was showing off Gran Turismo 5 in 3d, didnt play but watched with 3d glasses, the effect is nice, but not sure if it doesnt make certain perception more difficult, glasses fit fine. I feel that way even with 3d movies like Avatar
- Sony was at one of the two entrances, and people wearing 3D immediately attracted my eye. Playstation 3 is trying to make a big deal about its new 3D support, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a legit high end product on display to a Vietnam market. On one side, Gran Tursimo 5 was being demoâed, on the other was a still image of downtown Saigon. I of course went over to the GT5 side, waited to get someoneâs glasses (one player could play, while 3 other people could wear the glasses and watch the effects) so I could see it. The result? Definitely 3D. Is this good? Not sure. While the depth was certainly there, it wasnât necessarily easy to distinguish the images in a way that would lead to better video game driving. Everyone who tried to drive was terrible, though this could have easily just been people who couldnât play video games. The glasses were comfortable, but they were also connected to the console, so if youâre used to be wireless, it will be a bit odd. Maybe the wire was to keep people from running off with the glasses?
- Program girls (pg) / booth babes in full effect here
- I guess I knew this. Program girls are at every type of promotion in Vietnam, very common at supermarkets, very common in the malls. Pictures of ladies below after the textâŠ.
- At the massage chair company now, oddly enough i dont think i has tried one despite how many conventions i’ve been to
- Brand shoutout for dr. care massage products, i don,t think Phong wants to leave his massage chair
- I actually sat in a massage chair! It was cool. Would I pay for one? Not sure, but I wouldnât mind falling asleep in one and seeing how I feel when I wake up.
- No one heres cares about Amd’s booth, big waste of space
- AMD had a pretty large booth here. But all they did was show motherboards. WTF! Who cares? I would have expected a big gaming competition, big monitors, high-def, ludicrous frame rates for action shooters to show the power of AMD chips. But no.

Bach khoa antivirus showing off the women! Who knew vietnamese av software and tall lovely ladies were so related
- Bach Khoa Antivirus is one of the few local consumer software success stories. Originally created by a group of students from Bach Khoa University (the MIT or UC Berkeley Engineering of Vietnam in Hanoi), the company actually makes money in Vietnam selling its product. (For any thoughts why this would be a surprise, see my articles on piracy) Or I would think so, since theyâre still alive. Anyway, back to the women, BCAV had 4 really tall, fairly good looking women manning their booths. I am not sure which agency they went to, but there must be ways to order âtallerâ or âmore attractiveâ women, because not all booth babes are the same, and they definitely made sure they got their moneyâs worth. There were a few antivirus companies at the show, another was NOD32 (they had an interesting clear-cube setup to show a laptop with live worms underneath as if to show the protective power of NOD32.
By the way, I really hate the term âbooth babeâ.
Canon had a good booth in which you could take a photo, have it printed for you (friends got it) instantly, with its own souvenir frame. Samsung tried the same thing, but they in turn, were a lot more rude (I took a photo for this one), and then told us to come back 5 hrs later to pick it up (no thanks). I didnât bother checking out Logitech because I didnât feel like trying anything they had. Halo Shop, however, was there as well, but not selling anything. That was probably for the best as the convention wasnât the best fit to mention mass piracy, but disappointing nonetheless. VTC had a big stage to promote their games like Audition and FIFA online. I saw a guy with an unofficial Guitar Hero controller (in the pictures), but not sure if he was going on stage with it or justâŠâŠâŠsilly.
I got through the hall in about 1.5 hrs, and thought thereâd be 2 or 3 more halls, but that was it. The biggest and best in Vietnam in 1.5 hrs. The actual convention center only has 1 hall. And this was in the super new convention center built in Phu My Hung-if Saigon really does become huge, they will have to rebuild a new center or expand by 2015.
Overall, it was interesting. I enjoyed it. Would have liked to see more interactive exhibits and more space. For most booths, there was nothing to do, or if you were there to see something, you had to really fight to see that one phone or that one TV. Also, I thought there would be a better retail sales presence, but nothing to really buy. One vendor had special convention prices that were more expensive than their normal prices!
The pictures!
The Sony Gran Tursimo 5 booth. I guess I am not sure if both the TV and Playstation 3 were 3D, or just the PS3. I couldnât see much of the racing with other cars because the players were all so brutal.
VTC / Audition Both and Stage. Despite the pictures, I didnât actually watch any of this.
Next to the VTC booth was Guitar Hero guyâŠ..
A young kid playing a game (kind of looked like Lemmings + SimCity) and me checking out the Dr. Care booth.
More ladies.
Anitvirus â Back Khoa and NOD32
Ladies.
More.
And more. I think the girl on the left in blue was maybe the best looking girl I saw.
